Did Cavewomen Go Through Menopause?

Did our early ancestors have a menopause of their own?

Today, women accept menopause as a natural part of life. However, in the times of early civilization, women didn't go through menopause because they didn't live long enough to experience it. While women today can live well into their 90's, the average lifespan in the Neolithic era was less than 40. As our species evolved over the next five thousand years, we would see the average lifespan near double, thanks to medical advancements, scientific research and the miracle of evolution.

Nowadays, we want to live to see our 80's and 90's, but still maintain the physique and pizzazz we had in our 20's and 30's. It's a perpetual tug-of-war between quantity and quality. Most of us spend too much time trying to mask signs of aging on the surface and don't realize that the reason we're feeling the way we do isn't because we're aging on the outside, but because of the changes taking place on the inside, as we age.

In fact, the majority of the fears that women have about getting older, such as weight gain, hair loss, fatigue, low sex drive, mood swings, and vaginal dryness, are oftentimes the result of an underlying hormonal imbalance, such as menopause or perimenopause. Fortunately, symptoms of hormonal imbalance are not only treatable, but preventable with a well-balanced lifestyle.

A Simple Solution

What would it be like if we only had one type of doctor to address all of our health and wellness needs? Well for starters, I would hope that my dentist wasn't a proctologist for his last appointment. Fortunately, this isn't the case. Most of us see our primary care doctor when we're sick and choose to see a specialist when the matter is? well, special. You wouldn't ask a family physician to perform a dental exam - so why would you ask them to balance your hormones? Most doctors know very little, if anything at all about hormones and how they function in our body. That's why it's crucial that women consult with a hormones specialist, when it comes to symptoms of menopause and perimenopause.
